Geography: Mapping the Resistance

The Local Security Infrastructure of Indigenous Resistance

This map shows security apparatuses utilized by the people of the villages adjacent to 443 during the First Intifada; both defensive and offensive. The map displays the road infrastructure as it was in 1984, which can be contrasted by its condition in 2017 by turning on/off corresponding layers. The yellow polygons refer to patrolling areas, while the yellow dots refer surveillance points."

Resistance Patterns

Roads, Connectivity and Security
The defense of the village with its residents limited resources depended on its relative disconnection from its surroundings, having only two paved entrances. This made possible the concentration of surveillance and defense along these two lines. Simultaneously, the accessibility of the olive groves by foot, yet not by vehicles, allowed a (filtered) horizon for escape. Similarly, the architectural interventions such as opening multiple entrances in houses and their fences sought to create a network of connectivity that contrasts with the visible one and is only seen or known by the villagers or the cadres utilizing it. Analyzing the spaces of security/insecurity we can see that disconnection is a common trait in all secure places. This disconnectivity could take multiple forms: the cave is disconnected by virtue of its location as well as the imaginary behind it (locals would seldom venture into a cave, fearing wild animals or superstitious creatures), hiding places offer visual disconnection and limited physical connectivity; and visual disconnectivity could take the form of absence (disappearance) or noise (being lost in the crowd).
